Measuring Healthcare Delivery

In Canada, the quality of care that a person with IBD is provided may be different depending on where they live. Healthcare providers needed a way to match the care received to other areas in Canada, and also information on the best possible care that can be given.

5 star rating

At McGill University Health Centre, Dr. Alain Bitton led a team to create a list of items that summarize the best way to provide care. This team also set a goal to create an online form that healthcare providers can complete to measure how well they are providing care.

In 2016, the team identified and published 45 IBD quality indicators that can measure care delivery.

What is a quality indicator?
Quality indicators are evidence-based metrics that best reflect the level of care to be targeted for improvement.

These quality indicators were added to an online form for healthcare providers. This form is called an IBD global rating scale.

What is an IBD global rating scale?
The IBD global rating scale is a web-based self-assessment tool healthcare providers can use to measure how good the care is that they provide to patients and ways to make improvements.

The Canadian Association of Gastroenterologists website will be where healthcare providers can complete the IBD global rating scale. Healthcare providers complete a checklist annually to give themselves, or their centre, a grade on the scale. The grade of A means ‘excellent service’ and the grade of D means ‘basic service’. The items on the scale can be used to identify areas that can be improved upon in order to increase the grade.

In 2021, the IBD global rating scale will be available to IBD clinics and centres across Canada. A national IBD global rating scale may help healthcare providers to:

  • identify areas of care that need to be improved
  • increase a patient’s involvement in their own care;
  • provide the same care across Canada; and
  • keep improving the level of care Canadian’s living with IBD receive
